Freud's Theory of Id, Ego and Super- Ego {FILM REFLECTION}

For my film portraying Freud's Theory of Id, Ego and Super-Ego, my initial idea was to have a clear distinction of which part is being played through the use of clothing. I wanted to use the same subject but different outfits to portray the Id, Ego and Super-Ego; this is in order to show that everyone has an Ego that mediates between the desires of the id and the super-ego but due to my plan of having each part of the mind within one shot it seemed this idea would be too complicated and use a lot of time and talent in post production to manipulate 3 clips into 1 than ran smoothly.

I wanted to portray the Super-Ego through the use of 'White Clothing' in order to emphasise the Super-Ego, as the Super-Ego acts as a self-critical conscience, that helps the human behaviour reflect on social standards learned from parents, teachers and their environment. Where as the Id would have been portrayed through the use of 'Dark Clothing' to highlight what the Id is, through the use of clothing as the Id wants whatever feels good at the time, with no consideration for the reality of the situation; and have the Ego portrayed as a 'normal teenager' as the Ego is the realistic part of the human mind; this is the part that of the humans mind that is organised and mediates between the desires of the Id and the Super-Ego. However, on filming day my two subjects forgot about the dress code making it very hard for me to portray the difference in clothing as they both came in wearing black and due to limited resources on the day I had to work with what I had, so I had the subject playing the Super-Ego put on a cardigan that was going to be the closest thing to turning white when edited into Black and White, to further emphasise the contrast in characters.

My main focus within this film stayed the same, the main focus was around the sound, in post production I manipulated the sound; in order to have the Id and Super-Ego voices to come out of different side of the headphone when wearing them, Super-Ego coming out of the right headphone because thats where the subject who played the Super-Ego was placed within the scene and the Id coming out of the left headphone because thats where the subject who played the Id was placed within the scene. This was is in order to emphasise what its like as the Ego to be stuck in the middle of two voices telling you right and wrong. I decided to make the sound the main focus due to the main idea around Freud's theory is that our mind is split into 3 parts; the Id, Ego and Super-Ego; the Ego is the main part of the human mind that mediates between the desires of the id and the super-ego. I thought that this would be a different but effective approach towards portraying Freud's theory instead of it all being within the visuals.

The visuals within the sequence shows the Ego who is always stuck in the middle of the Id and Super-Ego and not really knowing what to do; I decided to capture all my shots from the same angle so that it would be easier for me to match them when creating the choppy sequence I have as well as it appearing like the Ego rebounds from both the Id and Super-Ego. When all 3 parts of the human mind are together I decided to add a wave effect to further emphasise that the Ego is always stuck in the middle and confused with what is the right and wrong decision.

If I was to do this project again I would defiantly use my initial plan that I had outlined as I think the visual aspect was a lot more stronger that what I have displayed within the final project but due to the limited resources I had on the day I had to work with what I had. Also how I was going to use clothing to emphasise the different characters would have been a different approach to Freud's Theory of Id, Ego and Super- Ego and think this would have complimented the effects within the sound that I created in post production.
